Why stories work in therapy

A clinical tool since Carol
Gray's social stories, 1991.

Rehearsal lowers the stakes

A story lets a client work through a test, confrontation, or medical visit in the safety of the session first.

Third-person builds perspective

Thinking about "the character," a client sees what they can't see in themselves. Distance makes reflection possible.

Scripts become behavior

A story that models "what you could say next" gives kids language to use. Over time the script becomes the behavior.

Types of stories

Four formats, four kinds
of clinical work.

Social stories

Short, concrete narratives that describe a situation and expected behaviors — the foundational Carol Gray format.

30+ stories

Self-narratives

First-person stories about a character working through a feeling or identity question — for self-concept work with teens.

22+ stories

Scenario vignettes

"What would you do" scenarios for perspective-taking and problem-solving — great for groups and lunch bunches.

20+ stories

Choose-your-path

Branching stories where the client makes choices and sees consequences — interactive rehearsal for real decisions.

18+ stories
When to reach for a story

For what a client can't say directly.

Preparing

Before a hard event

Rehearse a medical visit, new school, or difficult conversation.

Processing

After something happens

Work through an event by seeing it through a character's eyes.

Teaching

New social rules

Explicit modeling of what to do in specific social situations.

Sharing home

Between-session review

Parents re-read with the child to reinforce the script.

Branching story Choose a path
Choose-your-path

Rehearsal becomes active,
not passive.

Clients make real choices

At key moments the story pauses and asks what the character should do — the narrative follows their choice.

Consequences become visible

Every path leads somewhere. Clients feel different choices without the real-world cost.

Conversation opens up

The choices they make — and don't — become the entry point for deeper work.

🎞️ Clinician

A client was preparing for her first day at a new school. We read a story about a character in the same spot, and by the end she had language for what she was feeling. She used some of it Monday morning.
